Loyalty card rewards: 30 ideas by industry, with examples

The reward makes the card. Concrete ideas for every type of shop, the rule for protecting your margin, and loyalty card examples you can copy.

The golden rule. A good reward is desirable (the customer really wants it), reachable (within a few weeks or months, depending on how often people visit) and cheap for you (a product you make rather than a discount on everything). And it fits in one sentence on the card.

What a reward costs: the math in 30 seconds

Take the cost price of the reward, not its retail price, and divide it by the revenue needed to earn it. Example: "10th coffee free" in a coffee shop at €3 a cup. The customer spends €27 on 9 paid coffees; the free coffee costs you maybe €0.50 in ingredients. Your real cost is about 2% of that customer's spend, not 10%.

That's why a free product almost always costs less than a discount of the same face value.

The 6 types of rewards

  1. A free product on the Xth visit (stamps): the easiest to understand.
  2. A voucher at X points ("€5 off at 250 points"): suited to purchases that vary in size.
  3. A discount on the next visit ("50% off your 5th service"): useful for expensive services.
  4. An exclusive product reserved for loyal customers (a limited edition, a house-made product).
  5. Access or an experience: a workshop, a tasting, a preview, a reserved time slot.
  6. Double points for a period or a product: to boost a slow spell or a new arrival.

Frequently asked questions

What reward should I put on a loyalty card?

A reward that's desirable, reachable within a few weeks or months, and cheap for you: a product you make or sell rather than a discount on everything. It should fit in one sentence.

After how many visits should I give the reward?

It depends on how often customers visit: 10 visits for a coffee shop or bakery (a few weeks), 5 to 6 for a hair salon (a few months). Beyond 6 months of waiting, most customers give up.

Discount or free product?

A free product almost always costs less than a discount of the same value, because you pay for it at cost. Discounts still make sense for expensive services.

Can I change the reward along the way?

Yes. With a digital card, the change applies to every card already installed, without reprinting anything. Let your customers know with a notification.

Stamps or points?

Stamps when purchases are similar in price, points (often 1 per euro) when the amount spent varies a lot.
