Paper, app or wallet? What a digital loyalty card really changes, what it costs, and how to set one up without installing anything.
A digital loyalty card (also called a virtual loyalty card or digital punch card) is the digital version of the paper stamp card: it lives on your customer's phone instead of getting lost at the bottom of their wallet. At every visit, you add a stamp or points, the card updates instantly, and the customer sees their reward getting closer.
The fundamental difference from paper isn't the format, it's what it makes possible: a digital card gives you a direct line to your customers. You know who comes back and how often, and you can send them a message when you want them to come back. A paper card tells you nothing and never reminds anyone.
None, in everyday use: "digital loyalty card", "virtual", "mobile", "online" or "paperless" all describe the same idea, a card that lives in the phone rather than in a physical wallet. What really changes is where it lives: in an app to download, on a web page, or in the phone's wallet (Apple Wallet, Google Wallet). That's the difference that matters, and we cover it in detail below.
Three figures come up in every study on local retail:
The problem: the paper card captures this value poorly. It's left at home, lost, faded, and the day the customer clears out their wallet, your loyalty program ends up in the recycling bin. On the business side, it produces no data: no way to know how many customers are one stamp away from their reward, or to let them know.
| Paper punch card | Digital card (wallet) | |
|---|---|---|
| Always with the customer | Lost, forgotten, faded | On their phone, always |
| Reaching your customers | Impossible | Card notification (or text message, French numbers only for now) |
| Knowing your regulars | No data | Visits, frequency, best customers |
| Recurring cost | Printing, reprinting… | From €0, zero paper |
| Your brand image | Dated | Modern, in your colors |
Not all digital loyalty cards are equal. There are three main approaches on the market:
That third approach is the one we chose at nacard, because it removes friction on both sides of the counter: the customer installs nothing, and you have nothing to get them to adopt. The wallet is already in their pocket.
With a wallet solution like nacard, the whole journey takes three steps:
The full steps, for the customer and for you, are on our how it works page, and you can add a demo card to your own phone in 30 seconds with the demo.
Market prices vary enormously depending on the type of solution: from very limited free plans to several dozen euros a month, sometimes with a commitment, setup fees or hardware to buy. Compare at equal usage (number of customers, notifications, text messages), not on the headline price.
A wallet solution is structurally simpler, and it shows in the price. With nacard: the Starter plan is free, with no time limit, for your first 10 customers, so you can see the program running in real conditions. The Pro plan at €9.99/month excl. VAT unlocks unlimited customers and notifications, with statistics and campaigns. No hardware, no commitment, no hidden fees. Details are on the pricing page.
To put the return on investment in perspective: if your average sale is €10 and a loyalty program brings back just 20 customers one extra time per month, the program pays for itself ten times over.
More on these criteria, the traps to avoid and the questions to ask before you subscribe: our guide to choosing a loyalty card app.
With nacard, setup fits into a coffee break: start from the studio's template for your business, adjust the reward ("your 10th coffee is on us", "a free manicure on your 8th visit"…), add your photo, and print your counter QR code. Your program runs the same day, and your first customers add your card to their phones right away.
To go further: our 6-step method to create a loyalty card (reward, launch, mistakes to avoid), and the customer side in our tutorial add a loyalty card to Wallet.
Visit frequency and the right reward change from one business to another. We've covered the most common cases: the loyalty card for a bakery (daily visits, small tickets, the 10th baguette free) and for a hair salon or barber (a visit every 6 weeks, stamps or points, the 6th haircut free). Also: restaurant and pizzeria (points on the bill, off-peak tickets) and beauty and nail salon (a free treatment on the 8th appointment). And: coffee shop and café, florist, grocery and produce, butcher. Every industry is on the industries page, and you'll find 30 reward examples in our loyalty card reward ideas.

It's the digital version of the paper punch card: it lives on the customer's phone, usually in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. Every visit adds a stamp or points, the card updates automatically and can send notifications.
Not with a wallet card: Apple Wallet is preinstalled on every iPhone and Google Wallet on almost every Android phone. The customer scans a QR code, types their first name, and the card is added to their phone in seconds.
Solutions on the market range from a limited free plan to several dozen euros a month, depending on what's included. With nacard, the Starter plan is free with no time limit (up to 10 customers), and the Pro plan at €9.99/month excl. VAT gives you unlimited customers and notifications.
Yes. A wallet card works natively on both: Apple Wallet on iPhone, Google Wallet on Android. The same QR code at the counter detects the phone and offers the right format automatically.
With a GDPR-compliant solution, the data (first name, visits) is collected with consent, hosted in the European Union, and belongs to the business. Check this before choosing a provider: it's your customer list.
The demo takes 30 seconds, setup takes 3 minutes. Free to start.
